Dr. John Elsner, shown here in a formal portrait, was Denver's first Jewish physician and led a wagon train into Colorado in 1866. He was instrumental in the establishment of Denver's first general hospital and also traveled the region as a mohel to perform the traditional Jewish rite of circumcision while conducting a busy private practice.
