Woodstock West: "Build, Not Burn"
May 8, 1970
Woodstock West: Day 4
The convocation opened with Assistant Dean John Rice, quickly moving on to the chancellor.
Chancellor Mitchell spoke next, expressing the commitment of the University to remain open, as well as to supporting students who wished to strike, while being very clear that anyone who interfered with students and faculty attending or teaching classes would be disciplined.
Students alternately booed and jeered, many leaving the arena angry and spoiling for a fight of some kind. The students who gathered on the green promised, instead, to “build, not burn,” and started to assemble the shantytown that would become Woodstock West.
