Throughout the War, many victims of the Nazi regime found ways to express their suffering through creative outlets. Maria Loewenstein, a professional artist and designer, expressed her feelings through her art.

'JOB,' 1945, depicts the central figure in the Book of Job from the Bible. Job has long been a reference point in Jewish philosophy and religion, symbolizing the suffering of the Jewish people.

'Despair' is far more literal. In it, a woman sits alone in a cold, dark, nearly bare apartment. She is huddled in front of a stove and wrapped heavily in blankets, her cheek resting on her hand. The basket next to her is empty, and the room's one shelf has no food, only a few cups and an unlit candle.
