Max and Marie Loewenstein and Karin Steinberg left Germany on July 18, 1946 aboard the SS Marine Perch.

They sailed from Bremen, Germany and arrived in New York, New York on July 27. The family’s final destination was their new home with relatives in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Due to the circumstances of their departure, his family could not inform Henry of their emigration until they were sailing through the English Channel when they sent him a telegram from the ship.  Henry replied with a telegram that read: "LOVE AND ALL THE BEST - HENRY."

The moment Henry received their telegram he began planning his own immigration to the United States.

When Max and Maria arrived in the United States in 1946, they were advised to change their name to something that sounded more “American.” Maria’s answer was: “We suffered all these years because our name was so obviously Jewish, and I am proud of it. We are not going to change it, but we will drop the “e” after the “o” to make it easier for our American friends.”

Thereafter, the "Loewensteins" became the "Lowensteins," and began their new life in America.
