Description

Handwritten letter dated August 5, 1944 on a postcard written by Dr. Elisabeth Eylenburg to the Loewensteins when she was in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp, Czechoslovakia. The letter was smuggled out of the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp to the Loewensteins. She thanks them for their package and Karin's letters from Vetschau and says that the Eylenburgs are fairly well. The address side of the postcard has Eylenburg's address at the camp and the Loewensteins' address in Berlin, Germany and a canceled stamp featuring Adolf Hitler. The postmark is dated August 31, 1944. Ernst, Elisabeth, and Walter Eylenburg died in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Cards from Vetschau mentioned in the letter are referencing those cards from Karin Steinberg who was living in Vetschau at the time.

Translation from Henry Lowenstein:

"5.VIII.44 [August 5, 1944]
Dear Lowensteins,
Yesterday the card arrived from 5th of July from Vetschau. The day before the one from 11th of July from Vetschau. How can we thank all of you for your dear help. We are always happy to learn that you are well. And the packages of course are always highly welcome. The gingerbread cookies taste wonderful – not only for the boy. I was especially glad to get the brown shoe cream and shaving soap for my husband, and it was [much] enjoyed. Tell your dear girl please that here it was only possible [to locate] one Joseph Pick, a former bank director from Prague. I cannot imagine that the greetings were for him. Please let me know.
Unfortunately I cannot report anything new from the two of us. As far as health goes we are fairly well. Walter is growing taller daily and broader. He is almost as tall as his father. To all of you our most hearty regards.
Your grateful Eylenburgs"
